Dr Syed Mohammed Shamsul Islam

Syed is a Senior Lecturer of Computer Science and a Member of Low-risk Ethics and Grants Evaluation sub-committees in the School of Science, and a University Contact Officer (UCO) in the Office of Pro-Vice Chancellor (Equity and Indigenous).

Background

Dr Islam is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science in the Discipline of Computing and Security at School of Science in Edith Cowan University. He is also serving as a University Contact Officer under Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equity and Indigenous), and a member of the Academic Study Leave Committee and Low-risk Ethics Committee. He is a founding member of the Centre for AI and ML (CAIML) and leading the theme Human AI collaboration in Ecology and Environmental monitoring. He is also the founding Lead of the 3D sensing, visualization, and analytics Lab. Before joining ECU, he worked in different teaching and research positions at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and Curtin University. He conducts innovative teaching and multidisciplinary research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Medical Imaging, Robotics, Remote Sensing, Biometrics, Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering.

He completed PhD with Distinction in Computer Engineering (CE) from UWA in 2011 and received an MSc (CE) from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and BSc (EEE) from the Islamic University of Technology in 2005 and 2000 respectively. He has also completed professional courses in AI from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.

Dr Islam has supervised to completion 11 higher degree by research students and published over 80 scholarly articles including 32 journal articles (21 in Quartile-1). He has attracted 27 public media releases including TV news, grants (of around four million Australian dollars) and awards including the High Achieving Researcher 2021 award by ECU and best paper awards in IVCNZ’22, DICTA’19, DICTA 21, and ICMLDE’18 conferences.

He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Access, a Guest Editor of Applied Science, and a regular reviewer of over 30 technical conferences including CVPR, EECV, WACV, and over 10 Q1 journals. He has also been serving as a member of the IEEE Access Ad-hoc Committee for Plagiarism Investigation, Evaluator and Rapporteur of the SMASH Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, and external reviewer/assessor of EUROFLEETS+ and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Project Grants.

Dr Islam is serving as the General Chair for Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications (DICTA) 2024 to be held in Perth, WA from Nov 25-29, 2024. Previously, he served as Organising Committee member of over 13 conferences in different roles including an Invited Session Chair in ICONIP 2023, Publication Chair in DICTA 2023, Workshop and Special Session Chair in DICTA 2021, Award Chair in DICTA 2020, Technical Program Chair in ICCBI 2018, and Session Chair in ICMLDE 2017-2019. He is also a Senior member of both the IEEE and Australian Computer Society. He is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Scholarship Committee and has been Chairing the IEEE WA SPS Chapter since 2021.
