Professor Simon Cooper

Professor Simon Cooper is a part time professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and is an expert in patient safety and healthcare education.

Background

Simon worked clinically in the UK in ICU and resuscitation. He has also worked at the University of Plymouth (UK), Monash University and Federation University Australia.

Simon is the primary developer of the Team Emergency Assessment Measure (TEAM) which has been translated into 15 languages and used internationally to assess teamwork skills in emergencies: TEAM – The Team™ is a valid, reliable and feasible measure of teamwork in medical emergencies.

He is also well known as a developer of the First2Act patient deterioration program which includes innovative virtual simulations. To date 26,000+ participants have completed the 1.5 hour program with the scenarios completed 130,000+ times.

From 2018 Simon worked with Deans of Nursing to develop a student clinical Placement Evaluation Tool (PET) and in 2020 he commissioned the National Placement Evaluation Centre (nursing and midwifery) which has received over 35,000 clinical placement evaluations from across Australia. Simon’s primary aim is to translate his research into collaborative work that has a clinical impact. He has supervised 17 PhD students to completion.
