Professor Jonathan Hodgson
Jonathan Hodgson is Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology for the School of Medical and Health Sciences in ECU’s Nutrition & Health Innovation Research Institute.
He conducts research to better understand the impact of diet on vascular health.
Jonathan Hodgson has a B Agr Sc from La Trobe University and a PhD from Monash University. His research is based at the Royal Perth Hospital Medical Research Foundation, where he conducts randomised controlled trials, observational epidemiology and laboratory-based studies directed at understanding how plant-based diets benefit vascular health.
The primary objective of his research is to better understand the impact of particular diets and dietary components on vascular health. This is achieved through the use of randomised controlled trials and observational epidemiological studies, which are strongly supported by laboratory-based methods. The main health outcome studied is cardiovascular disease: the number one cause of death world-wide. His research explores how specific dietary components, such as nitrate (found mainly in green leafy vegetables), flavonoids (compounds derived from fruits and tea) and their food sources enhance vascular health. It establishes efficacy of defined approaches to increasing the intake of plant foods including fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
