Review of the Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer Program

In 2009, the WA Education Department commissioned ECU to conduct a review of its Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) Program. The Program, which begun in the 1970s, had not been reviewed formally by the Department.

The review involved AIEOs, principals and teachers and comprised two forms of data gathering:

  • an online/paper survey to schools who employed an AIEO/or AIEOs; and
  • school based interviews with staff from a representative group of 34 public schools across the state.

The review examined the role and duties performed by AIEOs and the factors that enhance or impede the effectiveness of the contribution of AIEOs.

Kurongkurl Katitjin is conducted the review on behalf of the WA Education Department.
